SCHOOL DIRECTOR or TEACHER
To provide a basic information tool for you, LIOR has compiled these EDUCATIONAL CD-ROMs, containing the easier basic parts of the Guides in order to provide a school level overview of the various renewable energy solutions, ideal to feed a few courses on the subject.
Each section is followed by a quiz for check up and subsequently proposes a “Game” to build an ECO-VILLAGE, based on the knowledge acquired in the first section. It can be used with teams in a classroom as a contest to reach the best result in the powering and heating of the village with non fossil fuels. Very interesting tool for inducing and awakening the student’s consciousness toward existing solutions and Renewable Energy education..
The calculations within this game are based on exact data, taking externalities into considerations (least environmental pollution) – (Calculations can be found on the CD-ROM)

PUBLIC AUTHORITY
To support the now very political actions towards environmental issues, Public Authorities start by showing the example by organising sustainable projects in and around public buildings: energy saving and renewable energy applications are a must.

Fortunately the technologies exist; the experience exists; now it is a matter of application by the Industry and population at a great scale. ANIMAL BREEDING FARM

SLAUGHTERHOUSE
This kind of waste is difficult to handle. Mixed with other organic waste in a
Biogas plant it can be productive and efficient disposal to get rid of a very
complex waste problem.

PRIVATE HOME OWNER
You are probably looking for ideas on what to do to enhance your home with some Alternative Energy solution. Your heating / cooling system bill is getting out of hand and you are aware that the future in that field is bad news. Yes there are several actions you can do to guarantee power or heating for your home in a more economic way and at the same time do your share of contribution in the climate change perspective.

What to do?

• PV panels on your roof or in a corner of your garden: to heat your hot water and to provide cheap power (connected to the grid) : Your electricity meter will turn backward when you produce power, and forward when you are using the grids power in case of bad weather.
• Passive solar large glazing on south oriented surfaces: for houses in cooler climates: a pure living delight, let alone energy saving
• Heat pumps in the house for heating (LIOR Bioclimatic Guide)
• Biomass furnace in woody areas. (Biomass Combustion Guide)
• A small wind turbine in open windy spaces (near the sea, on top of a hill) (Wind Energy Guide)

LIVING on an ISLAND
The energy supply or production on islands is a domain in which the Renewable Energies are extremely welcome. The most frequent first solution is of course the Wind Energy, whether it is on a large central Wind farm or many individual smaller windmills: all this information is largely addressed in the LIOR Guide on Wind Energy.
Other solutions are available and can be complementary or basic, such as Biogas from a sewer or manure or other organic waste system which can then become a fuel for power production.
Photovoltaics in sunny or medium sunny places are the equally productive sources for isolated dwellings. (Perhaps not in the Falklands!) - See LIOR Guide on Photovoltaics.

LIVING in a FOREST AREA
Living surrounded by forests means the possibility of finding a permanent source of natural “fuel” for combustion technologies. It clears the woods of the fallen trees or branches and can produce heat and power without polluting.
In well organised countries with lots of forests like Austria or Finland, the
national production of energy is largely fuelled by wood. District heating of
whole villages for instance is very efficiently providing the population with heat and hot water. There is no deforestation however since more trees are planted than removed.
In locally woody places technologies are available at a smaller level. Small
communities, groups of a few houses can be heated by a local small wood furnace at a very low cost.
If wood logs or woodchips are easily available to you for a single home, there are many wood heating solutions, which are as easy to handle as an oil boiler or furnace. Automatic loading systems are part of the modern installations. All that is needed is an aired storage place for the wood fuel.
